Edited by Charles Webel and Johan Galtung. Peace studies and peace research have grown exponentially since their initiation in Scandinavia about a half century ago by Johan Galtung. Today, across the planet, there are literally scores of undergraduate concentrations, master's programs, and a small but increasing number of universities (primarily in Europe) offering, or preparing to grant, doctoral degrees in Peace and/or Conflict Studies, or in a closely related field. Simultaneously, peace studies and peace research have forged a transdisciplinary and professional identity distinct from security studies, political science, and international relations. The Handbook of Peace and Conflict Studies will, in a hardback edition, be acquired by major libraries, peace research institutes, peace education, and conflict transformation training programs around the world. As a paperback text, the book could also be used as a primary or secondary text in peace and conflict studies degree programs, principally at the graduate level. The contributorsare all distinguished scholars and/or professionals working in peace studies and/or conflict resolution and transformation. They come from many countries and represent a wide range of theoretical, methodological, and political positions.
