Resumen

This UNISCI paper deals with the new threats to regional and global security. In the present international environment terrorism is at the top of the security agenda. It is considered as a strategic threat. The image of massive casualties and unlimited violence produces much concern, given the frightening scenarios that are being projected. However we must not forget other threats that produce significant damage to millions of individuals, families, societies and, in the end, the states. In comparison with terrorism, drug trafficking and international crime constitute a bigger threat to social cohesion. A healthy society can be threatened buy these criminal activities that are increasingly effective and transnational. If the policies of prevention and the free political systems can be severely damaged or even destroyed from the inside. This challenge has not been sufficiently evaluated. Politicians often prefer to present immediate and frightening situations. This UNISCI paper tries to present the new threats with a special focus on Southeast Asia. This kind of challenge needs a regional and global response.
