This volume examines the theoretical and empirical status of applied ethics. The central aim is to show how a pluralistic and democratic society can deal with ethical issues in the light of its moral conscience.Part I sets the stage for a conception of applied ethics as applications of a transnational civil ethics, based both on a discourse theory of knowledge and on the economic writings of (among others) Amartya Sen. Part II examines how applied ethics relates to important theoretical discussions in philosophy, such as construcvism, virtue ethics, hermeneutic and deliberative theory. The third part discusses applied ethics in light of globalization and identifies recurring dilemmas as well as the problem of universal norms. Finally, the work presents two critical views of applied ethics as an application of discourse ethics - one based on republicanism and the other on contractarianism and constitutional economics.
