Resumen

This book combines two unusually important themes - religion and revolution - in the context of Mexico's 1910 Revolution. Above all, it deepens our understanding of religion's importance within the Revolution by stressing the interrelationship between revolutionary and religious ideas and practices. While Mexico's spiritual history after 1910 is often essentialized as a church-state power struggle, these essays reveal the complexity of contemporary interactions between the Revolution and the sacred. This volume explores topics as diverse as anticlericalism, indigenous cults, Catholic pilgrimage, and "revolutionary" religions such as Spiritism. Collectively, the authors show that the Revolution saw the creation of new forms of belief and practice as ordinary people accommodated revolutionary efforts to transform Mexico's cultural landscape; and in so doing, the book shows that the Revolution was a period of genuine religious change, as well as social upheaval.
