Since the turn of the new millennium, and despite predictions of an increasingly borderless world through the process of globalization, the United States, Israel, and India have built an astonishing combined total of 5700 kilometers of fences and security barriers across their political borders. For comparison, if strung together these fences would stretch all the way from New York to Los Angeles, with enough left over to build another fence from Frankfurt to Istanbul. Reece Jones analyzes how these previously controversial border security projects were justified in their respective countries, the consequences of these physical barriers on the lives of those living in these newly securitized spaces, and what long-term effects the process of closing political borders will have in these societies.
